Automation Isn’t Enough: The Human Side of Industry 4.0 by Sunho Lee

A recent article from Reuters reported that Samsung has opened its newest semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, integrating advanced automation and AI for unprecedented productivity (Reuters, May 5, 2024). The story celebrated the plant’s technological marvels—robots gliding across spotless floors, data streams optimizing every process, and almost science-fiction levels of precision and scale. Yet as I read, I found myself thinking not just about the technology, but about the people who must adapt to these changes.

During my summer internship at a small factory, I watched experienced workers—many with decades of hands-on expertise—struggle to adjust to new digital tools. The frustration and anxiety were real, and it made me realize that Industry 4.0 isn’t just about replacing labor with machines. It’s about guiding workers through transitions, providing training, and ensuring that the benefits of innovation are shared.

The article reminded me that Korea’s success in manufacturing has always depended on its skilled workforce. If automation is to truly elevate industry, it must go hand-in-hand with respect for human knowledge and investment in continuous learning. As a future industrial engineer, I want to help design systems that are not only efficient, but also intuitive and accessible, making technology work for people, not the other way around. Industry 4.0’s real challenge—and opportunity—will be to support both technological and human growth, together.
