As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into educational settings, discussions about its impact on teachers and students are gaining momentum. The July 2024 Wired article, “AI Can’t Replace Teaching, but It Can Make It Better,” highlights that while AI cannot fully replace teachers, it has the potential to greatly enhance the quality of education when implemented thoughtfully.

For instance, AI systems can provide real-time answers to students’ questions and offer customized materials and feedback tailored to individual learning progress, enabling more independent study. Furthermore, by automating repetitive and time-consuming tasks such as grading and administrative work, AI allows teachers to devote more time to students, focusing on mentoring and emotional support.

The article predicts that the role of teachers will evolve from simply transmitting knowledge to becoming mentors who guide students’ psychological growth and foster creativity. Personally, I have found AI chatbots to be invaluable in my studies, as they allow me to ask questions at any time and receive immediate feedback.

However, I believe AI still has limitations in fully understanding students’ emotions or subtle changes in behavior, as well as in motivating individual learners and supporting the formation of social relationships. Therefore, I expect that the most effective educational environments in the future will be those where AI and teachers collaborate, each leveraging their unique strengths. When used as an assistant to reduce teachers’ workload and enhance their capabilities, AI can ultimately provide students with deeper learning and more positive school experiences.
